The basics

What is Excel to Word conversion?

An Excel workbook holds worksheets: grids of rows and columns where each cell has a type and a format. A Word document holds paragraphs and tables on pages. Converting between them means rebuilding every grid as a real Word table that can be edited, restyled and printed.

This converter reads the workbook's XML directly in your browser. It picks up sheet names, cell values, dates, booleans and cached formula results, then lays each sheet out as a table with a shaded header row and borders that survive printing. No Excel installation and no upload are involved.

Best for workflows like:

  • • Adding a data appendix to a Word report
  • • Turning a budget sheet into a board handout
  • • Attaching an inventory or price list to a proposal
  • • Sending a monthly export to people without Excel
  • • Printing a sheet that is too wide for a spreadsheet page

Three steps

How to convert Excel to Word

1

Drop your workbook

Choose an .xlsx or .xlsm file. All visible worksheets are read at once and listed as tabs above the preview.

2

Review the preview

Switch sheets and check the table preview. Header rows, sheet names and zebra rows are applied automatically.

3

Download the .docx

One click builds a Word document with one table per sheet. Open it in Word, Pages, Google Docs or WPS and keep editing.

What comes out

What is preserved — and what is not

A clean table is more useful than a pixel-perfect copy of a spreadsheet. Here is the exact trade-off.

Workbook elementIn the Word file
Worksheet namesHeading above each table, or a page break when headings are off
Cell values and textEditable table cells with the original characters
Dates and numbersDates as ISO dates, numbers right-aligned
Booleans and errorsTRUE / FALSE and the original error text
FormulasThe last saved result, not a live formula
Header rowBold, shaded and repeatable on every page
Multiple sheetsOne table per sheet, each starting on a new page
Cell colors, fonts, merged cellsNot reproduced — the table uses the document's own styling
Charts and imagesNot included; only cell data is converted

Built for reports

Why use this Excel to Word converter

Designed for the moment a spreadsheet has to become part of a document — not for round-tripping formatting.

All sheets, one document

Stop copying tables one at a time. Every visible worksheet is included in a single .docx, with page breaks between sheets.

Headers that repeat

Long tables keep their column labels at the top of every page, so a printed report never loses its context.

Private by default

Budgets, payroll and customer lists are parsed locally. The file never leaves your computer.

Print-ready layout

Column widths are fitted to the page, so wide sheets do not spill off the right edge of the paper.

Editable, not an image

The result is a native Word table. Change a value, add a row, restyle the header — it all works.

Free and account-free

No sign-up, no watermark, no upload queue. Open the page, convert, move on.

Where it fits

Common Excel to Word use cases

Reports and proposals

Drop a pricing or results sheet into a document that already has narrative around it.

Meeting packs

Combine several tabs into one printable handout for a board or client meeting.

Data appendices

Attach the full table behind a summary so reviewers can check the detail.

Invoices and lists

Turn a line-item export into a document you can send to someone without Excel.

Answers

Excel to Word FAQ

Is this Excel to Word converter free?

Yes. There is no account, watermark or per-file limit. Convert as many workbooks as you need.

Is my workbook uploaded anywhere?

No. The .xlsx is unzipped, parsed and converted inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and no copy is stored.

Can I convert .xls files?

This tool reads .xlsx and .xlsm. Old binary .xls files need to be opened in Excel and saved as .xlsx first — the messages in the tool will remind you.

Are formulas calculated in the Word file?

Formulas are exported as their last saved result. Word tables contain values, not live spreadsheet formulas, so recalculating happens in Excel before conversion.

Are multiple worksheets included?

Yes. One table per visible worksheet, each starting on a new page with its sheet name as a heading. Hidden sheets are skipped.

Are cell colors and merged cells preserved?

No. The output is a clean, print-ready table. Colors, fonts and merged cells are not reproduced; the value of a merged cell appears in its top-left position and the covered cells stay empty.

How large can a workbook be?

Up to 20 MB on desktop and 10 MB on mobile. Each sheet is limited to 20,000 rows and 63 columns — the maximum number of columns a Word table supports. If a sheet is larger, the tool tells you what was included.

Does the Word table fit on the page?

Column widths are scaled to the page content width, and wide sheets default to landscape. If a sheet has many columns, the table becomes dense but stays inside the margins.
