Word to Text Converter
Get just the words out of a .docx. No fonts, no styles, no Word markup — headings, paragraphs and tables as clean UTF-8 plain text you can paste anywhere.
Drag and drop a .docx, .docm, .dotx or .dotm file here
or click to browse — up to 20 MB on desktop, 10 MB on mobile
No file selected
- Plain UTF-8 text with paragraphs separated by blank lines.
- Headings and lists kept readable — list items keep a dash or number, headings stand alone.
- Tables as text rows — cells joined with a pipe so the structure is still visible.
- No upload — the document is parsed in your browser.
Formatting, images, colours and page layout are removed. Images become [Image] markers, and footnotes or comments are not included.
The .docx is parsed locally. Nothing is uploaded, and the text is generated in this tab.

The basics
What is Word to Text conversion?
Plain text is the lowest common denominator: it survives copy-paste, imports into every database, and works with scripts and search tools. Converting a Word document to text means removing everything that only exists to control layout.
This converter reads the .docx structure and extracts the words in reading order. Headings stay on their own line, paragraphs are separated by blank lines, list items get a dash, and table rows are joined with pipes so the columns remain legible.
Best for workflows like:
- • Feeding a Word document into a translation or AI tool
- • Extracting copy for a database or search index
- • Removing formatting before pasting into a plain-text editor
- • Preparing a manuscript for a text-only workflow
- • Reading a document without opening Word
Three steps
How to convert Word to text
Drop the .docx

Read the text
The output panel shows the extracted text immediately, with headings, paragraphs and table rows in order.
Copy or download
Copy the text or download a .txt file encoded as UTF-8.
What comes out
What the plain text looks like
No markup survives, but the reading order and rough structure do.
| In Word | In the Text | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Headings | A line of text | Heading levels are not marked |
| Paragraphs | Separated by a blank line | Easy to split or import |
| Lists | - item / 1. item | Ordered lists keep 1., 2. |
| Tables | cell | cell | cell | Rows on separate lines |
| Hyperlinks | Link text only | URLs are not appended |
| Images | [Image] | Position kept as a marker |
| Bold / italic | Plain text | Emphasis is removed |
| Page breaks, headers, footers | Removed | Only the body remains |

Answers
Word to Text FAQ
Is this Word to text converter free?
Yes. There is no account, watermark or per-file limit.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The .docx is unzipped and parsed inside your browser tab; nothing is uploaded or stored.
Is all formatting removed?
Yes. Bold, italic, fonts, colours, spacing and page layout are not part of plain text. Headings, paragraphs and lists remain readable through line breaks.
How are tables represented?
Table rows are written as cells joined with a pipe character (|), one row per line. Merged cells are expanded into empty cells.
What about images and footnotes?
Images become [Image] placeholders. Footnotes and comments are not included in the text output.
Does it work with scanned PDFs or photos of documents?
No. This tool reads real .docx files and extracts existing text; it does not perform OCR on scans or images.
What encoding is the .txt file?
UTF-8. Accented characters, curly quotes and non-Latin scripts are preserved.
What is the file size limit?
Up to 20 MB on desktop and 10 MB on mobile. Very large documents take longer because the whole file is parsed on your device.
