The basics
What is Markdown to Word conversion?
Markdown is a lightweight way to write structured text: # for headings, - for lists, pipes for tables. Word is the format most teams review, comment on and sign off in.
This converter reads CommonMark and GitHub-flavored Markdown and rebuilds the structure as native Word elements — Heading 1–6 styles, real bulleted and numbered lists, real tables, monospace code blocks and clickable hyperlinks. It is not a screenshot of your preview and not a flat wall of styled text.
Best for workflows like:
- • Turning a README into a reviewable status report
- • Sending documentation to a client or manager
- • Converting GitHub wiki pages into Word handouts
- • Handing a blog draft to an editor who works in Word
- • Archiving notes as a paginated document
Three steps
How to convert Markdown to Word
Add your Markdown
Drop a .md file into the upload area or paste the source into the editor. The preview updates as you type.
Check the structure
Look through headings, tables, lists and code blocks in the preview. The download is A4 with standard margins, 11 pt body text and page numbers.
Download the .docx
One click builds a real Word file. Open it in Word, Pages, Google Docs or WPS and keep editing with familiar styles.
What comes out
What Markdown becomes in Word
Every element maps to something Word already understands, so the document stays editable instead of frozen.
| In your Markdown | In the Word file |
|---|---|
| # Heading | Word Heading 1–6, visible in the Navigation pane |
| **bold** · *italic* · ~~strike~~ | Character formatting, not typed punctuation |
| - item · 1. item | Native bulleted and numbered lists with nesting |
| - [x] task | Checkbox glyph followed by the task text |
| | table | | Real Word table with a shaded header row |
| ```code``` | Monospace block with a light shaded background |
| > quote | Indented quote with a left rule |
| [link](url) | Clickable hyperlink |
| --- | Horizontal rule |
| YAML front matter | Document title, author and date metadata |
Built for handoff
Why use this Markdown to Word converter
The output is a document a colleague can open, edit and comment on — without asking what happened to the formatting.
Real Word styles
Headings use Word's built-in styles, so the navigation pane, outline view and automatic table of contents all work.
Live preview
See the formatted document before you download it. Fix a heading level or a broken table while it is still easy.
Private by design
Files are parsed in your browser. Drafts, internal notes and unpublished docs never touch a server.
Print-ready output
A4 pages, standard margins, 11 pt body text, page numbers and real Word heading styles — no settings to fiddle with.
GitHub-flavored features
Tables, task lists, strikethrough and fenced code blocks are supported, not just the CommonMark basics.
No account, no limits
Convert as many files as you need. There is no sign-up, no queue and no watermark on the downloaded document.
Where it fits
Common Markdown to Word use cases
Technical documentation
Turn README and wiki content into a document that product, legal or a customer can review.
Research notes
Keep writing in Markdown, then hand in a paginated Word file with numbered sections.
Product specs
Convert a spec written in a repo into a review copy with tables and action items intact.
Content handoff
Give editors and translators a Word file they can track changes in, instead of a raw .md file.
Answers
Markdown to Word FAQ
Is this Markdown to Word converter free?
Yes. Convert as many files as you like, with no account, watermark or usage limit.
Are my Markdown files uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read, parsed and converted locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the page keeps working if you disconnect after it loads.
Will the headings become real Word headings?
Yes. # to ###### map to Word Heading 1 to Heading 6, so the Navigation pane and outline view work as expected.
Does it support tables and task lists?
Yes. GitHub-flavored tables become real Word tables, and task list items are converted with a checkbox glyph next to the text.
What happens to images in my Markdown?
Images are replaced with a short alt-text placeholder. Remote images are not embedded because the browser cannot reliably fetch files from another domain, and relative paths in a dropped file have no folder to resolve against.
Does it convert LaTeX math inside Markdown?
Math is kept as plain text rather than converted to Word equations. This tool focuses on document structure — headings, lists, tables and code — rather than equation typesetting.
Can I paste Markdown instead of uploading a file?
Yes. Paste directly into the editor, watch the preview update, then download the Word file. The download name follows the uploaded file name, or the front-matter title when you paste.
What is the file size limit?
Up to 20 MB on desktop and 10 MB on mobile. Very long documents still work, but the preview and export take longer because everything is processed on your device.
